BMW 118i Timing Chain Failure (F20/F21, N47)
If your 118i is a pre-2015 model with the N47 diesel engine — that's the early F20/F21 generation — timing chain failure due to chain guide wear is a well-documented pattern, subject to NHTSA recall 18V-755. We replace timing chains, guides, and tensioners as standard on every N47 rebuild.
The later F20/F21 (2015-onwards) and F40 generations use a different engine, the B47, which is significantly more reliable and doesn't share this specific issue.

ABOUT THE BMW118i ENGINE
The 118i has been a mainstay of the 1 Series diesel range since 2012, spanning two generations under one badge. Early F20/F21 models from 2012 to 2015 use the N47, a 2.0-litre diesel that's part of a family known for a specific timing chain issue. From late 2015 onwards, across both the F20/F21 and later the F40, the 118i switched to the B47, a newer, significantly more reliable unit that doesn't share the N47's timing chain concerns. Knowing which one your car has matters, because the components and the known wear pattern differ — which is exactly why we confirm your exact engine by registration before quoting.
The 118i is no longer in production, but we continue to rebuild and replace engines for every one still on the road.
